53rd Season

The Wolcott Dance Academy celebrated its' 50th Anniversary three years ago. Mrs. Townsend established the Wolcott Dance Academy in 1959, fulfilling a need for a professional dance school in this area to give students a proper dance education. Corinne started her dance training at the age of 6 with extensive training in Connecticut and New York. Also, Corinne has been director of the “Miss Wolcott Pageant”, an official chaperone for Miss Connecticut, Vice President of the Wolcott Chamber of Commerce, and serves on the Board of Directors. Mrs. Townsend has also been the Director of the Wolcott Classics, President of the Wolcott Arts Association, and is a member of the Connecticut Community Foundation. Corinne has volunteered for numerous charities and was the Education Chairperson for the American Cancer Society. She has received the Distinguished Businessperson of the Year Award from the Wolcott Chamber of Commerce in recognition of the dedicated service and support to the Wolcott Community and was given an official citation from the General Assembly of Connecticut in recognition for her contributions to both the business community and the people of Wolcott. Corinne is also registered in the National Registry of Who’s Who and has been appointed on to the Business Advisory Council in recognition of her valuable contributions to Connecticut and a voice for small business in Washington.

Her daughter Linda followed in her footsteps. She began dancing at the age of 3 and continued her dance training throughout Connecticut and was on scholarship with the famed American Ballet Center in NY City. She is the director and choreographer for the dance academy’s performing company and competition students. Linda’s students were the first in the area to enter national competitions, traveling to South Carolina in 1982. Students from the dance academy are still competing nationally and have won countless awards, cash prizes, scholarships, trophies and titles. Titles include “Most Entertaining,” “Best Precision,” “Excellent Emotional Execution,” “Best Ballet Technique,” “Best Costume,” “Grand National Champions,” and hundreds of Top Overall Titles in various competition categories. Linda was Miss Wolcott, Talent Winner and 3rd runner-up in the Miss Connecticut Pageant and has since taught talent routines to contestants for various pageants and has produced over 80 title winners.

With two generations of tradition before her, Linda’s daughter Nicole started dancing at age 2 and was the youngest dance competitor at age 5. She has received over 800 awards including “Best Technical Execution,” “Most Potential,” “Future Star,” “Best in Show,” and “Miss Superstar.” Nicole won “Top Model” titles eight times, and other pageant titles such as “Miss Connecticut Preteen,” “Miss Teen New England,” “and Olympic Miss.”

Nicole has completed accredited dance course at Central Connecticut State University as well as taking master classes from numerous teachers from across the US. Her students have received numerous awards in both dance and modeling. Both Linda and Nicole have entertained, organized and hosted charity shows for St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital, American Diabetes, Muscular Dystrophy, Girls Inc. and for numerous convalescent homes, veterans’ hospitals and senior citizens centers.

Many of their students have pursued dance careers and became very successful. Nine of their students have opened their own dance studios across Connecticut. Numerous other students are working professionally, such as Rachel Ricciardi who is a choreographer and entertaining at the resort hotel in Mexico, Nancy Abondola who attended the Alvin Ailey dance school in New York City, and Christine Pelletier who taught dance in Los Angeles, California school system.

Many other students have gone on to college and have taught and assisted in dance classes at their colleges. The list of accomplishments that the academy’s students have achieved is endless. For the 50 years they have been fulfilling little girl’s dreams.

Corinne, Linda, and Nicole believe that you measure a dancing school’s success not by how many students you have enrolled, but by how many of your students’ lives you touched and influenced. The Wolcott Dance Academy is truly successful. They will continue to provide a proper dance education and promote the arts for many more years to come.
